Only on Sundays does Big Klaus lend two large horses to Little Klaus, so he can plow his land with the borrowed animals and his own horse, “Hans”. He drives the horses on by yelling “all my horses”, which angers Big Klaus so much, that he kills Little Klaus’ horse, Hans. In order to continue feeding his family, Little Klaus decides to sell the hide of his now dead horse. On the way to the market, he is overtaken by a bad storm and hopes to overnight in the miller’s house. But only the miller’s wife is there and she sends him away. So Little Klaus crawls into the miller’s stall and observes from the hay stall how the miller’s wife is carrying on with the sexton, feeding him a sumptuous meal. When the miller unexpectedly arrives home, his wife hides the food in the oven and the sexton in a crate. Little Klaus begs the miller for a place to stay for the night and something to eat. He puts the sack with the horse’s hide under the table and asserts that there’s a wizard in the sack. And he proves so by predicting there’s food in the oven and the sexton in the crate (whom he calls the Devil).

SEE YOU IN THE NEXT WAR (Dovidenja u sledecem ratu) (Nasvidenje v naslednji vojni) (1980) * with switchable English subtitles *
See You in the Next War (Serbian: Dovidenja u sledecem ratu, Slovene: Nasvidenje v naslednji vojni) is a 1980 Yugoslav war film directed by Živojin Pavlovic. During their holidays in Spain, a chance meeting takes place between a former Slovene partisan Berk and an ex-German soldier Bitter, who had fought on opposite sides in WWII Yugoslavia. In the vivacious and cheerful atmosphere of Spain they evoke in their conversations memories of the wartime period they lived through as adversaries. Viewed from a historical perspective, they try to understand those characteristics of the ancient struggle for life and death, which were not sufficiently evident during the bloody conflict. Their conversations are interwoven with vivid pictures of Berk´s personal recollections of wartime people and events. After returning from Italian internment, Berk joins the partisan army on the liberated territory. There he meets Kristina, a fanatic revolutionary, with whom he had collaborated before as a member of the underground movement. Although he is attracted by the girl, he is not fully at ease with her for he does not fully share her ideological fervour. Soon afterwards he encounters Anton, an experienced fighter from the Spanish Civil War, with whom he makes friends and spends the greatest part of his partisanship until Anton´s tragic death towards the end of the war. Their life experiences and dialogues represent, together with other wartime events revived in Berk´s memory, a kind of counterpoint to the more rationally coloured conversations with Bitter, while the frivolous setting of the contemporary tourist Spain stands out in bright contrast to the now and then painful recollections of this turning-point in history.

Hans, however, isn’t after riches, but justice. For years, he served the king. Now that he’s sick, he’s been thrown out on the street with nothing (even though the law states that corporations with more than 50 employees must have health insurance benefits). And since he doesn’t even have COBRA, he now wishes to fight for his rights. If only he could wait a thousand or so years more: Obamacare would have made his journey moot.
FATA MORGANA (1971) *with switchable English subtitles *
Werner Herzog's film essay about North Africa, presented in a fashion contrary to the usual methods of classical narratives. In the three chapters --- "Creation", "Paradise" and "Golden Age" --- the history of humanity is presented in such a way as to reflect its decay, destruction and failure. These are highlighted by aircraft wreckage in the desert; abandoned villages; the carcasses of livestock; and dilapidated huts constructed out of truck wrecks and corrugated iron. The accompanying narration is spoken by the film historian Lotte Eisner, which, along with the visual metaphors on the screen, adds to the overall feeling of confusion.

Unbeknownst to both him and the hotel owners, the Germans are about to enter the town ... and make the hotel into their headquarters. To avoid capture, Bramble assumes an identity, which proves to be a lot more dangerous than if he had left his uniform on and said 'howdy' to the Germans. If all that weren't enough, the guest of honor at this small hotel is none other than Field Marshal Rommel himself. Bramble discovers Rommel has a secret strategy to finish off the British in Egypt, code-named "Five Graves". THE POWER OF LIFE (Die Kraft von Leben) (1938) * with hard-encoded English subtitles *
Nathan Rabinovitz, a bookkeeper for the Feinberg Dress Company, devotes his spare time to his inventions. One day, he's offered $3,000 for one of his inventions and he promises to decide whether to sell or not by the end of the next day. When he learns that Sam Schindler, his daughter Leah's fiancee, needs $500 to avoid going to jail for embezzling money, Nathan visits Sam's father, who flatly refuses to loan his son the money to avoid prison. Nathan argues that the power of life comes through finding happiness in one's children's lives and that parents mustn't forget their obligations to their children (three guesses which man's children are going to be living in the basement for twenty years while paying off their student loans). Schindler has a ready answer for Nathan, though: Sam stole from his account and few children really love their parents. In fact, he says, children and the enemies of their parents (guess whose children ended up working summers and attending community college).
THE PRISONER (1955) * with switchable Spanish subtitles *
The Prisoner is based on the experiences of Hungarian cardinal Joszef Mindszenty in everything but name. That the story wasn't attributed to him is due to the wish of the script's writers to make clear that the events shown not only could have applied to almost any religious figure of authority in Eastern Europe at the time, but did indeed take place in practically every country under communist control.
At the conclusion of a mass, a beloved Catholic cardinal is arrested under the watchful eye of a political commissar, the Interrogator. Before leaving the cathedral, the cardinal tells a priest to remember that any confession the Cardinal reportedly makes will either be a lie or the result of human weakness. Brought before the Interrogator, the cardinal recognizes him as a member of the former royal family and a resistance fighter. The Interrogator acknowledges the cardinal's reputation as a resistance hero, then informs him that although the government views the church as insignificant, it's to be discredited through him just the same. Over the next several days, the Interrogator keeps the Cardinal awake in his cell by keeping the light constantly burning and interruptions by guards frequent. The cardinal refuses to sign a pre-written confession and when brought before the Interrogator, refuses all offers of food or drink. The trial date is eventually set and while an anxious crowd watches, certain the Cardinal will never break, they are crushed when he admits his entire life as a priest has been false, that his life was driven by ambition and lack of humility. He agrees to having betrayed the resistance and to having accepted money from foreign countries to create a secret arsenal. The Cardinal refuses to ask for the mercy of the court and collapses, pleading for God's mercy. He's sentenced to hang and the Interrogator expresses regret at the efficiency of his work.
A CANTERBURY TALE (1944)
A Canterbury Tale is a profoundly personal journey to bucolic Kent, England. Set amid the tumult of the Second World War, yet with a rhythm as delicate as a lullaby, the film follows three modern-day incarnations of Chaucer’s pilgrims — a melancholy “landgirl,” a plainspoken American GI, and a resourceful British sergeant — who are waylaid in the English countryside en route to the mythical town and forced to solve a bizarre village crime. Building to a majestic climax that ranks as one of the filmmaking duo’s finest achievements, the dazzling A Canterbury Tale has acquired a following of devotees passionate enough to qualify as pilgrims themselves.

But, one by one, they all fall victim to some unseen, vicious dog, which "hounds" the guests of the local inn late at night. Jane calls Sir John of Scotland Yard for help. And in spite of the fact the detective can't find his way out of a paper bag, he makes some interesting discoveries in the spooky citadel (or, to be more accurate, his secretary --- playing the amateur sleuth --- shows the veteran detective how it's done).

AN HEILIGEN WASSERN (1960) * with switchable English subtitles *
Water means life. But in the Swiss canton of Wallis, where it rarely rains, and where the local farmers get the precious water from the glaciers by means of a wooden pipeline, many have died to keep the water flowing. That's why the people of Wallis respectfully refer to it as "sacred water". Now, once again, an avalanche is threatening to come crashing down from the steep cliffs; and when it does, the water pipes fastened to the side of the cliff will be smashed and the fountains in the village of St. Peter will go dry. So, fate must take its course: a volunteer must scale the cliff wall to repair the damage. That's what the town's ancient laws demand.
Wasser bedeutet Leben.

Upon arrival, he is sincerely welcomed by King Menelik, who allows Massaia to organize a mission and perform charitable work throughout all of Ethiopia. Abuna Athanasius, head of the Coptic Church in the region, does all he can to hinder the activities of the Catholic missionary and to have the man expelled. Failing to convince the king of the need to get rid of Messaia, Abuna causes a schism between the ruler and the warring tribes, who pay fealty to him. Rebellion breaks out and Massaia, aware that he's the cause of the conflict, decides to leave and puts a young, native priest he consecrated in charge of the charitable work still to be done.

This led him into the arms of British Intelligence, who trained him in the art of sabotage and returned him back to Greece. FANDO Y LIS (1968) * with switchable English subtitles *
Filmed in black and white and with a very low budget, the film follows Fando and his paraplegic lover Lis as they make their way through a grim, post-apocalyptic landscape searching for the town of Tar. The mythical town is rumored to make all of your dreams come true. Along the way, they meet up with a very strange cast of characters. They come upon a ruined town where the women try to lure Fando into sex games and Lis is forced to fend for herself. Other scenarios involve people bathing in mud, where Fando leaves Lis to stand on her own for a while; a group of cross-dressers, who dress Fando and Lis in each other’s clothing in a surreal gender bending scene; and a rather unsettling scene where Fando undresses Lis and allows strange men to touch her naked body. One sequence in particular involves four old women playing cards, with the winner of each hand getting up close and personal with a young, buff man. By the time the film reaches its conclusion, Lis has been transformed into a Christ-like figure.

As German forces invade Prague in March 1939, Axel Bomasch, a Czech scientist working on a new process for armor-plating, is able to escape with Allied support and is flown to England. Bomasch's daughter, Anna, is arrested and sent to a concentration camp, where she is interrogated by the Nazis, who are looking for her father. Anna refuses to cooperate. Soon she is befriended by a fellow Czech prisoner named Karl Marsen, who says he’s a teacher imprisoned for his political views. Together, they’re able to escape and make their way to London. Anna does not know that Marsen is, in fact, a Gestapo agent working for the Nazis —assigned to gain Anna's trust and follow her to England to locate her father. Following advice from Marsen, Anna places a cryptic advertisement in a newspaper to contact her father and let him know she’s in the country.
THE GILDED LILY (1935)
New York stenographer Marilyn David has become good friends with Peter Dawes, a newspaper reporter who takes the same subway as she does each morning. Peter is crazy about Marilyn, but she meets and has her eye on wealthy Englishman Charles Gray, and they fall in love. Charles is the son of Lloyd Granville, a titled British nobleman, which means Charles is rich, good looking, and minor royalty, tipping the scales in his favor. Charles proposes marriage to Marilyn, but after a sudden argument, she turns him down. Charles leaves town and Marilyn discovers he is a duke's son and already engaged. Marilyn confides in Peter, her platonic friend, who is ecstatic at this bit of news and publicizes her as the 'No Girl', the working girl who refused a chance to marry into monied nobility. So Marilyn is suddenly famous, and she cashes in on her sudden and unwelcome notoriety by becoming a cafe entertainer. In an unexpected way, she succeeds. Marilyn's fame causes Charles to take a second look at her; he asks her to reconsider, but Marilyn wonders if she might be better off with Peter after all. But can she decide between her two loves?
Thank you and the best to all of you,
