2 DVD SET:  BATTLE FOR MOSCOW (1985) * with switchable English subtitles *

Yuriy Ozerov's monumental 1985 work about the Battle of Moscow is much less dramatic and more "historical" than his equally massive "Liberation", made more than a decade earlier.  Somewhat freed from the censorship of earlier years, Ozerov was able to address a topic hitherto rarely covered in Soviet works: the opening phase of Operation Barbarossa from the German invasion on 22 June 1941 up to the climactic days of the Soviet counteroffensive before the gates of Moscow.

While still heavily influenced by the official version of events, the film unflinchingly covers the disastrous policies and inefficiencies, which allowed the Germans to rapidly advance and take the newly incorporated lands of Byelorussia and Ukraine into their hands, as well as large portions of western Russia and Ukrainian lands east of the "old border". Nevertheless, it is painfully skewed in its portrayal of Stalin and those around him: Stalin is benevolent; wise; heeds the advice of his cronies in the Supreme Soviet and allows his generals to make the final decisions when the chips are down. Apparently, Ozerov didn't get the message that the cult of Stalinism pretty much came to an end in 1956; and even though Brezhnev was a Stalinist, no one in the USSR at that time had any illusions about how Stalin treated those around him. Zhukov is likewise, but justifiably, praised for his accomplishments (something Stalin didn't take kindly to in the postwar period and promptly banished him to a secondary command in the boondocks to remove any competition for the laurels of victory). The rest of the generals in the film are either grudgingly acknowledged or treated as borderline traitors and incompetent morons (yet any mention of the Great Purge, which decimated the officer corps of many of its finest officers, is an outright non-event in the film).

Nevertheless, the film is entertaining, if not typically long for Ozerov's docudramas, and is the first of its kind to portray and explain how the disasters of the early days of the War almost resulted in a very different Europe.

LA TERRE  (1959) * with switchable English subs *

Elderly French farmer La Pere Fouan, no longer able to work his land, draws up a contract dividing his property among his three adult children: irresponsible Buteau; poacher Hyacinthe dit Jesus Christ; and obsessive Fanny. Fouan's depressed wife, realizing that their children have no intention of fulfilling their father's expectations, dies soon after the land is split, leaving Fouan to learn the truth alone.

KEIN MANN ZUM HEIRATEN  (1959)

Wolf, the son of manufacturer Karl Kruse, is enjoying life to the fullest as an itinerant playboy. The sporty youth shines as a brilliant racer, rower and skiier, but none of that particularly impresses his girlfriend Brigitte Voss. Brigitte is the self-confident owner of a boutique and while she considers Wolf to be more than an adequate lover, he's not good enough to marry. At first, Wolf's disappointed to discover she thinks that way about him, but then decides to turn his energy into convincing her she's wrong.

THE LOVE RACE  (1931)

Musical comedy film based around the fierce rivalry between two motor manufacturers ... and the romance that develops between the daughter of one and the son of the other.

ESPOIR  (1945) * with switchable English subtitles *

Filmed in 1939, but not released until after the end of the Second World War, this movie dramatizes the horrors of the Spanish Civil War in 1937 Teruel. The underdog Republicans try their best to hold out against the fascist attackers of General Franco, but while they have high morale, they don't have much of anything else.

This version of the film appears to be 20 minutes shorter than the original put out in Spain (and 10 less than the French version).

LES DAMES DU BOIS DE BOULOGNE  (1945) * with switchable English subtitles *

Helene understands that Jean doesn't love her anymore. She's full of grief and anger and starts brooding on the idea of revenge. When she meets Jean again, she pretends to be the one that's fallen out of love. Jean's relieved, thinking they can now part as friends. Helene goes to a night club, where Agnès is a famous dancer. Agnés has been forced into this life of debauchery and courtesanship because of poverty. She hates it and equally hates all the lecherous men there. Helene met Agnès and her mother several years ago, and after the show, looks them up. She says she'll help them leave this degrading life. The next day, they move to an apartment Helene's rented and stay there anonymously. Some days later, she arranges a seemingly spontaneous meeting between Jean and Agnès in the Bois de Boulogne. Jean immediately falls in love with Agnès, who, he thinks, is an innocent girl from the countryside. But Jean's unaware that there's more to this "chance" meeting than meets the eye.

DIARY OF A RAPE  (1971) * with switchable English subtitles *

Lena is alone in the city while her parents are on vacation. She's torn between her innocent boyfriend and the older, more experienced --- and sadistic --- sociopath, Helge. She tells Jan about Helge, who gets angry and slaps her. Lena then runs away and hitchhikes with the promiscuous and friendly couple Lars and Ulla, with whom she goes to Jan's mother's summer cabin. The day after, her boyfriend finds her there and takes her back to the city, where she yet again is drawn to Helge. Lena's memories, the present, and fantasies are frequently woven into the fabric of the film.

DER KEUSCHE ADAM  (1950)

When a son-in-law to be decides to run for the hills at the very last moment and leaves the daughter of a well-off farmer deeply hurt, a less than desirable servant suddenly seems to be a possible, acceptable replacement for the missing bridegroom.

PROJEKT AQUA  (1969)

A country at the crossroads to the Orient and the West. A thermal power plant is being built there with the help of the DDR. When West German intelligence gets wind of the project, they launch "Project Aqua". Things start to get out of hand when the cover of a West German intelligence agent by the name of Major Sander is blown. Needless to say, there'll be a dramatic ending to the "project".

ZEHN KLEINE NEGERLEIN  (1969)

This German TV-drama of Agatha Christie's crime drama, "And then There were None", concerns ten persons accused of murder --- and who were actually guilty --- who were able to escape prosecution due to legal technicalities. They are lured to a lonely island under false pretenses and picked off, one by one, even though they appear to be the only ones there.  Who's the assassin and what's his/her motive?

VICTIM  (1961) * with switchable Spanish subtitles *

A successful barrister, Melville Farr, has a thriving London practice. He is on course to become a Queen's Counsel and people are already talking of his being appointed a judge. He is apparently happily married to his wife, Laura. Farr is approached by "Boy" Barrett, a younger working class man with whom Farr has shared a romantic, but non-sexual, relationship. Farr rebuffs the approach, thinking Barrett wants to blackmail him about their relationship. In fact, Barrett has been trying to reach Farr to appeal for help, because he has fallen prey to blackmailers who have a picture of Farr and Barrett in a vehicle together, in which Barrett is crying with Farr's arm around him. Barrett has stolen £2,300 from his employers to pay the blackmail, is being pursued by the police, and needs Farr's financial assistance to flee the country. After Farr intentionally avoids him, Barrett is picked up by the police, who discover why he is being blackmailed. Knowing it will be only a matter of time before he is forced to reveal the details of the blackmail scheme and Farr's role, Barrett hangs himself in a police cell. Learning the truth about Barrett, Farr takes on the blackmail ring and recruits a friend of Barrett's to identify others the blackmailers may be targeting.

POLIZEIREVIER DAVIDSWACHE  (1964)

http://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0008/0008232-polizeirevier-davidswache-1964.jpg

For Sergeant Glantz, prostitution, theft and murder are nothing out of the routine. You see, his beat is the most famous in the world: the Davidswache in St. Pauli, Hamburg. He's looking forward to his daughter Lilo's visit, whom he hasn't seen in a long time. He intends to pick her up at the train station at 4:20pm. But by the time she arrives, Glantz might no longer be alive; for on this day, Bruno Kapp is being released from prison. Kapp was a brutal gangster Glantz put behind bars four years ago and the criminal's sworn vengeance. He intends to meet Glantz long before his daughter does.

LA NUIT DE VARENNES  (1982)  *with switchable English subtitles *

On 20 June 1791, the king and queen of France try to escape from revolutionary Paris to join monarchist allies outside France. However, they are intercepted and arrested in the town of Varennes. The incident inflames popular distrust and hatred against the monarchy. Linked to this historical event, the film imagines a group of travelers on the same road, including the American patriot Thomas Paine, the noted seducer Casanova, the French novelist Restif de La Bretonne, and one of the queen's ladies-in-waiting. They reflect various attitudes toward the momentous changes taking place around them.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM  (1959) * switchable English & Spanish subtitles *

The first puppet kinescope in the world, it is based on the famous poetic comedy by William Shakespeare. Three worlds meet in this story: the noble world of three Athens couples, a common popular world of tradesmen amateur theatre and a fairy-tale happiness of magic creatures as elves and nymphs. The film is considered the most remarkable Jirí Trnka's work and a milestone in the history of the world animation.

EIN MANN NAMENS HARRY BRENT  (1968)

Jane Conway wants to marry her fiancee Harry Brent and therefore resigns from her job at a manufacturing plant run by Samuel Fielding. He, in turn, is shot by the applicant Barbara Smith in the middle of an interview to fill Jane's former position. Inspector Wallace, Jane's former fiancee, takes charge of the investigation. He notes that Barbara Smith sat with Harry Brent on the train to Guildford, the place where the action took place, and that before she came to the meeting, she laid flowers on the grave of Harry Brent's parents. At first, a possible motive for the murder can't be found. Before she can be questioned in detail, she commits suicide in prison. Dying, she asks for Harry Brent.

FOUR WAYS OUT  (1951)

This stark, gritty drama opens with a robbery of the gate receipts at a soccer stadium. It's committed by a group of diverse, desperate individuals in broad daylight, as thousands are cheering the match. The police doggedly pursue their investigation, but to no avail. The movie chronicles the plight of the thieves, who, at first, go into hiding separately and then begin to wither under the pressure of the crime.

DAS EINFACHE MADCHEN  (1957)

Caterina Bastiani comes from a long line of performers and she's certainly a talented musician. And when she's suggested for the lead in a new musical, her dream of becoming a success on the stage seems to be coming true. However, the author of the play isn't too thrilled with the choice of this singing and dancing whirling-dervish for his creation. Caterina, however, isn't about to just let her chance for fame casually pass her by: she's determined to prove she can successfully pull off the role as a simple and naive young woman. In fact, she's found what she believes to be the ideal way to demonstrate it: by smuggling herself into the playwright's home as a servant.

SCHOOLGIRL REPORT – VOL. 1 (1970) * switchable English subs *

A young student lingers behind during a school field trip and makes her way back to the school bus, where she meets up with the bus driver and begins making amorous advances upon him. The two are interrupted by the arrival of a teacher, who immediately hauls the student down to the principal's office. The teachers are mortified at the young girl's behavior and threaten her with expulsion. A psychologist tries to defend her actions by giving other "examples" of this behavior he has encountered in his practice. In a series of erotically charged episodic-stories, we see a young girl seduce her stepfather; a gymnast, who enjoys some locker room antics with a coach; and a trio of beautiful young girls "save" a lifeguard at the local pool.

10 vignettes about scandalous behavior of horny German schoolgirls. First, a strict, conservative teacher is lured by three of his beautiful, nubile young female students into a compromising situation with tragic results.
