Dantons Tod  (1963)

In Buchner's 1835 work --- written in only five weeks --- the gamut of every historical and human tragedy caused by political change is encapsuled in the events from 12 March to 15 April 1794, when the populist hero Danton was removed from power and subjected to the revolutionary terror of the brutal Jacobinists. Dantons Tod is the story of a revolutionary leader brought low by Robespierre. The film portrays the dramatic events surrounding the story's protagonist, who can't believe that the masses will touch him, but, in the end, must accept events and come to terms with them as he is marched off to the guillotine.

Remake of Reinhold Schnuzel's timeless comedy about deception in drag was Johanna von Koczian's first film role: second-rate actor Viktor makes his living dressing up as ladies and performing in nightclubs. One day, an unemployed singer, "Viktoria", fills in for him (now, follow this: she's a woman, acting like a man, who's pretending to be a woman. Got it?). Quickly, the superior talent of the singer makes "Viktor" a success, but problems develop when a well-known ladies-man falls for "Viktoria" (leading one to wonder throughout the film ... does this make him a homosexual?).

The town's reverend and school teacher are in favor of putting on a religious knight's tale to attract visitors to the town. Alois' daughter Annemirl, however, is temporarily housing four musicians of a ladies' band stranded in the no-name village and she thinks they're performing in the village square will attract more people than a boring passion play of sorts. Thus begins a pseudo civil war in the town, with some of the residents in favor of piety and the others ...

Callie's friend, Helen Robinson, immediately congratulates her on the clever stunt and wishes that she could be as original in finding a way to leave her husband, Joe. Though Helen applauds Callie's announcement, Connie Mills, another guest, tells her husband Jack that she finds the casual treatment of divorce distasteful. While Joe falls ill and retreats to the library, Helen joins her playboy paramour, Tony Minot, on the balcony, where she tells him that their affair must come to an end because their love has "gone cold." Later, Joe accuses Helen of ignoring his needs and being more than just a golfing parter to Tony. Joe's suspicions of Tony also lead him to inform Jack that the roué is after Connie as well. Jack quickly dismisses the thought and expresses his confidence that Connie will remain faithful to him. When Jack's car breaks down, Tony drives the Millses home and joins them for a nightcap. While Jack mixes their drinks in the kitchen, Tony tries to woo Connie, but she resists him and reassures him that she loves her husband. Jack realizes that Tony's sole interest in his home is his wife, so with Connie's approval, he throws him out. The Adventures of Arsene Lupin  (1957)

Arsène Lupin, the multifaceted gentleman thief, steals two masterpieces from the President of the Council. Some time later, posing as Monsieur Gilles, a winegrower who is marrying his only daughter, he asks several jewelers to come to his mansion and robs them of their gemstones. The next victims of André Laroche (Lupin's new identity) will be none other than a Maharajah and Kaiser Wilhelm II himself...

Pot-Bouille  (1957)  * with switchable English subtitles *

Young, handsome, dashing -- but cynical -- Octave Mouret arrives in Paris, determined to conquer the belles of the capital. His first attempts are not too successful, as he is rebuffed by Valérie Vabre, the neurotic wife of the landlord of the block of flats he is accommodated in. As for the affair he starts with Caroline Hédouin, the married owner of "Au Bonheur des Dames", the shop where he works, the least we can say is that it lacks passion. But he does seduce Berthe, a girl he refused to marry when her mother tried to force her on him, now that she is married with another. He will finally achieve his end when Caroline, now widowed and needing a man to help her manage her business, asks him... to marry her!

Heute Nacht passiert’s  (1953)

A professor inherits a fashion salon from a former lover. Since he doesn't want his wife to find out about his previous love life, he asks his son-in-law to take over the running of the place. Needless to say, that leads to a lot of misunderstandings.

But the threats to Faone are real; and to save the young officer, Sappho pretends to appreciate the attention of the head of the guards. Unfortunately, like most insecure men, Faone cannot stand this. He strikes his superior and is sent into exile for insubordination. Faone, however, will never reach his place of Exile, Thrace. In fact, he escapes from the ship transporting him there and puts himself at the head of a new revolt, this time succeeding in dethroning the Melancro.

Bread  (1929)  +  Anna Karenina  (1918)  * with switchable English subtitles *

A demobilized Red Army soldier returns to his village. Inspired by the spirit of collectivism, he plows a field so that the kulak's portion now belongs to the community and sows it with grain confiscated from the 'Philistines'. His father, a man of traditional world outlook, lives in a pantheistic world of Ukrainian ethos, where sin has a physical dimension. He doesn't believe the stolen grain will sprout on stolen land. When the grain finally sprouts, the old man admits his son was right; for the sake of building a new world, the old laws of the universe must be broken.

You’re not an Orphan  (1962)

The real life story of an Uzbek couple, who adopted fourteen wartime orphans, one of them Jewish. You Are Not an Orphan is a rare film depicting a difficult life in war-time Central Asia, and paying tribute to the events of the Holocaust.

Samson  (1961)  * with switchable English subtitles *

Samson follows its Jewish protagonist  from an anti-Semitic private school to prison; then into the Warsaw Ghetto; and finally, over the ghetto wall to the outside world. The construction of the Jewish ghetto is communicated through a single, stationary shot. A shabbily dressed mass is clustered in front of the camera, and a pair of hands with a hammer and nails secures one board at a time, until the shot of people has been replaced with a shot of a wall. Through minimalism and simplicity, Wadja establishes a separation between the world of the impoverished Jew and the world outside the ghetto. The viewer looking on as the ghetto walls block the view of what happening inside, is made to feel detached from the horror inside. One question Wajda raises is that of Jewish solidarity and the guilt of being saved while one's brethren are suffering. Samson escapes from the Jewish ghetto but immediately wants to return. Although he could enjoy a comfortable life of cocktails and women, he'd rather be in the ghetto, collecting corpses off the streets. Samson argues that his place is with the Jews, that he should suffer alongside them. A fake-blond beauty offers a different take. She confides to Samson that she's Jewish and has been concealing her roots in order to avoid the ghetto. Although she argues passionately, Samson's emotional strength inevitably inspires her to accept her fate as a Jew. When Samson is bruised and exhausted, lying on the ground, he is encouraged by a close friend who says, "one man can suffer such blows and rise again." For Wajda, this is the greatness displayed in Jewish history. Samson is a scrawny, haggard young man, who says very little and might almost border on boringly average; but he has the ability to rise again despite any blow, proving his strength of spirit.

The Small Back Room  (1949)

Sammy Rice is a British scientist working with a specialist "back room" team in London during the Second World War. Rice is embittered because he feels military scientific research is being incompetently managed. He is also enduring unremitting pain from his artificial foot. The painkillers he has been prescribed are ineffective and his use of alcohol as an analgesic has led to his alcoholism. His girlfriend Susan puts up with his self-pitying, self-destructive behavior as long as she can, but finally breaks up with him, telling him that he lacks the ambition to better himself. Rice is brought in by Captain Stuart to help solve the problem of small booby-trapped explosive devices being dropped by Nazi bombers, which have killed four people, including three children. They receive some useful information from a critically wounded young soldier. Two further mines are found at Chesil Beach: they look like common thermos flasks. Stuart is first on the scene, but has difficulty getting Rice on the telephone, because Rice is alone following his breakup, angry, drunk and destructive. Rice quickly sobers up and travels to Chesil Beach only to find that Stuart tried to defuse one of the mines and has been blown up. Rice sets to work on the second mine after listening to the notes Stuart dictated to an ATS corporal during his effort earlier in the day. He discovers that the mine has two booby traps, not one.

·         PORT SAID

Einer zuviel an Bord  (1935)

Captain von Moltmann has disappeared without a trace with his ship "Cedar" during a journey.  What at first looks to be an accident, may also have been a murder.  When the prosecutor Dr. Burger and Commissioner Sorenson take a closer look at the case, it turns out that two men on board the ship hated the captain.  One of them is Rohlfs, the First Officer, who suspected an affair was going on between his fiancee Gerda Hegert and von Moltmann.  The second guy is the First Engineer Sparkuhl, who views the captain as the seducer of his niece, who later committed suicide.  And although the naval court in Hamburg decides that the captain went overboard due to no fault of the crew, rumours persist.

4 DVD Set: War and Peace  (1968)  * with switchable English and Spanish subtitles *

War and Peace (Russian: Voyna i mir) is a Soviet-produced film adaptation of the Leo Tolstoy's novel War and Peace.   Sergei Bondarchuk directed the film, co-wrote the screenplay and starred in the role of Pierre.  The film took 7 years to produce and cost over $100 million.  If inflation is taken into account, a film of this magnitude would cost over $700 million today, making War and Peace the most expensive film ever made. Pre-production started at Mosfilm in 1961, and filming commenced in 1963.  According to the Guinness Book of Records, the Battle of Borodino scene included 120,000 soldiers, making it one of the largest battle scenes ever filmed (comparable to the number of soldiers used to film Kolberg, which we also have in stock).  Many museums in the USSR contributed artifacts for the production design, making it one of the most elaborate films ever created.  War and Peace was one of the first films in the USSR to be shot and released in 70 mm.  The process was called Sovscope 70 in the USA and Europe, and was the Soviet version of Todd-AO, a large camera/presentation format with 6-channel stereophonic sound.  There are many hand held shots in the film, which are difficult to achieve with a 70 mm camera.  However, a special lightweight camera was devised for this film.

Der Tunnel  (1933)

The engineer MacAllan designs a tunnel, which will join America and Europe together on the seabed.  A group of American billionaires are financing the gigantic project, but the construction of the tunnel is proving to be as tedious as it is dangerous.  MacAllan's worst enemy is the speculator Woolf, who had embezzled the money for the construction and who is attempting to cover up his crime by carrying out acts of sabotage.

World War II:  Singapore Disaster  (January 1989)

Das Volk nutzt die Macht, die DDR, 1958 - 1961

Grosse Deutsche Kunstausstellung 1943

The very-difficult-to-find, 1943 official catalog for the yearly exhibitions shown at the Haus der Deutschen Kunst in Munich, which contained the supposed best artworks and those most representative of politico-cultural values in the Third Reich. The catalog is made up of a 82-paged index of artworks and where they could be found in the museum; a photo section of 68 pages; and 44 pages of contemporary advertisements.

Matrosen, Soldaten, Kameraden – A photobook of the new Kriegsmarine  (1933)

127-paged book, almost entirely consisting of photos and accompanying descriptions, pictorially tells the story of the new German Navy, now rapidly expanding under the leadership of the new government in power headed by Adolf Hitler.  For the naval enthusiast, a real treat.  Book has a 1936 birthday inscription on the blank cover page.  Some age spotting and pages are a bit loose after Page 112.

Wir zogen gegen Polen  (1940)

Almost 150 paged book with photos and a campaign map in the back of the book about the 7th Armeekorps' adventures in the Polish Campaign, which took them from Cosel north of Ratibor (Raciborz) in the Reich on an eastward path to Zamosc.  Very interesting photos and a viewpoint of the campaign from the "enemy" side of the conflict.

WWII German Map of Poland and the German East

Map issued by Velhagen & Klasing  (Leipzig) from the 1930s, put out shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War showing the former German eastern territories as well as the Second Polish Republic. Measures approx. 30 x 31 inches.

1946 Map of the Occupied Zones of Germany

Issued by the Atlanta Service in Frankfurt, this map put out after 27 September 1946, shows approval for its distribution by the military government of the occupying authorities in North Rhine Westphalia. The map has legends in German, English, French and Russian. Measures approx. 15.5  x  20.5 inches.

WWII French Map of Europe

French map of Europe put out sometime in either 1940 or prior to June 1941 (as indicated by border definitions on the map [eg. Bessarabia being part of the USSR]). Quite a bit of staining and some minor tears on the folds. In addition, someone, most likely a resident of the Reich, wrote dates on parts of the map, corresponding mainly to invasion dates (thus, whoever had this map, had it in 1941, when the Germans marched into the Ukraine). Pencil marking on the blank side reads, "Europa Karte mit Herman's(ed.- ?) Feldzug", indicating this map was probably taken as booty in occupied France and brought "home" to be used to record the progress of an individual soldier during the earlier stages of the War. Measures approx. 39 x 35 inches.
